Welcome

The Vasbouragan Society was founded in 1931 in Detroit, Michigan by Armenian survivors and immigrants who had made their way to America after the horrendous Turkish genocide from 1896 to 1915. Fueled by the heroic spirits and memories, which emanated from the 1915 "Defense of Van" (a historic stand off of Turkish invaders). These insightful founders established a nonprofit Michigan organization
Their goal was to establish chapters throughout the United States and to maintain worldwide communications with other Vanetzies who were similarly uprooted from a magnificent homeland, which encompassed the region surrounding Lake Van, (southwest of the present day Republic of Armenia). For over 2000 years, the area of Van was inhabited by Vanetzies who considered this area the province of "Vasbouragan" or "Vaspurakan" and their capital city as "Van".
Their people have a rich cultural, intellectual and nationalistic history, which have been the underpinnings of this organization's achievements and  worldwide contributions.
There presently exist 4 chapters in Boston, Fresno, Detroit and Los Angeles. Some members can still speak a dialect of Armenian, which is unique to the Vanetzies. All Vanetzies agree that the Vasbouragan was so beautiful that it still prompts the age old saying which has been passed from generation to generation of Vanetzies--- "Van in this world- PARADISE IN THE NEXT."
